A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

frogerineThat orange frog actually makes me feel a little bit less naseous about amphibians.

The only two times I inspected a frog up close thisclose were during Biology class, once in high school and once in college. Although I have no idea why Zoology was considered a valid elective for a Computer Science student.

I remember my first encounter with a frog. In my group there were 3 girls and 3 guys, including my crush and his crush ( who, heartbreakingly, wasn’t me). I brought the frog (to impress him, of course!), he did the pinning and cutting (which impressed me, of course!), and she did all the shrieking (which I hope made him curse the day he laid eyes on her).

In all my frequent furtive glances at my crush, I wonder how I was able to vividly remember (up to this day) how disgusting (and kawawa) the frog looked, pinned helplessly on the board, cut open for all the world to see its living organs, especially his little heart pulsing in vain. I swore I would never cut up (or watch the cutting up of) another frog in my life.

Of course I couldn’t have graduated with honors if I kept that promise. Come my sophomore year in college we had to do the frog-cutting thing all over again. The difference was that this time I was partnered with a guy who seemed to act like a guy until he saw a frog. And then he all but fainted. Which left moi to do all the pinning, the cutting and later on, the disposing. Ugh. At least this time I got more acquainted with Froggy, much as I didn’t want to. (Although I’m very ashamed to say I was quite delighted to see for myself how long a frog’s intestines were, ‘coz I pulled them off Froggy’s little body myself.)

I promise I will never mutilate another frog in my lifetime. Nor will I let my Gimmi, either. It’s a good thing that he’s past that stage. I’m told, in medical school, they deal with cats, dogs and human corpses instead.

A postscript…

My favorites folder is crammed with bookmarks but it’s not everyday I come upon a site as original as this one.

Worth1000.com is actually a contest site. Members create and join in their own contests. Those with the highest accumulated ratings win. There are 4 categories: Photoshop, Photography, Text and Multimedia. The best category (in my humble opinion) is the Photoshop one where contestants test their skills in digital manipulation, coming up with images depicting phobias, extra-large condiments, public harm announcements and more.

The image above, entitled Frogerine, is from the Worth1000.com Photoshop contest Plantimals where contestants try to create a combination of plant + animal. This one garnered first prize.

i killed hundreds of frogs during my freshman year as a biology student. we skinned them, gut them, de-boned them and a lot of other unthinkable and unspeakble cruelties. we were appalled at first, of course. but then u get used to it. but what raised a howl of protest from the student body was when we started to drown cats and dissected them. hehe.

at least u didn’t experience having the frog manage to depin itself from the table and suddenly leap, with all its insides hanging out! i thought my own heart would leap out of my own body when that happened in 2nd year biology!
