What was the Original Name of the Sony Walkman?

Posted on 01 March 2009 by Flisha

The Sony Walkman came into this world carrying different names for different places. So there is not one original name of the Sony Walkman, but many.

In Japan, the Sony Walkman was called the Walkman. In the United Kingdom, it was known as the Stowaway. In Sweden, it was Freestyle. But in most other places, including the United States, the Walkman was originally known as the Soundabout.

A bit of trivia: the inventor of the Walkman (co-chairman of Sony, Morita) actually hated the name “Walkman” but Sony had already started the Walkman campaign so he had to stick by it. To know more about the Sony Walkman device and its origins, follow this link.
