CoD 6 (Modern Warfare 2): A Review

Posted on 20 December 2009 by Gim

Imagine that you’re a member of an elite special ops covert force tasked to save lives by preventing terrorists from killing innocents. One of your assignments is to infiltrate a particularly badass terrorist organization hellbent on nothing but sowing terror (through POS systems, I guess). To make matters worse, these terrorists are practically hired guns; working for the West one day and helping Jihadists blow up a bomb the next. In order to infiltrate this group, your teammates have sacrificed their lives and the lives of a lot of other people to get the members of the group to trust you as one of their own. Suddenly, you’re in. And your very first assignment? Shoot down innocent civilians in an international airport.

Will you do it?

That’s the dilemma I was faced with when I started playing Call of Duty 6 (Modern Warfare 2). This uberkewl game was released by Infinity Ward (the makers of the first installement of the series) last November 2009. It is a direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It is set five years after Soap and the rest of the team killed international terrorist Imran Zakhaev. Contrary to what they expected, the Ruskies, instead of villiying Zakhaev, glorified him instead and made him a hero of the New Russia. In an unexpected twist, the Allies find themselves the enemies when Russia blames the Airport massacre on the Americans and with the help of ingenious counter-intelligence, actually invades the f***ing US of A, launching an attack that destroys the white house and the Capitol. The game then focuses on how the Americans defend themselves against the Russian invasion and how the Brits struggle to bring the real culprit to light.

I really think that the best feature of this game is the graphics. Awesome would be a word that best describes it. I think the producers were sticklers for the details. Even the gore seemed real enough- and believe me when I say that I’ve seen a lot of gore at the ER. I think the graphics and interface were designed to pull the players into the game, make it real enough that your heart skips a beat whenever a shot is fired, and cringe whenever bullets start zinging your way. Even the heat radiating off the barrel of a gun is accurately depicted.

Speaking of weapons, this game features some of the most modern weaponry ever featured in a game. This includes assault rifles with red dots and heart beat sensors- heart beat sensors! This game truly lives up to its name.

The storyline is pretty good too, with just the right plot twists to surprise even the more experienced players (isn’t that right Captain Price?).

Overall, I’ll give this game 6 stars out of 5. Yes, it’s that kewl.
