A new Earth-like planet has been discovered, and scientists have named it “Super Earth”, due its sheer size. It is 2.7 times larger than our home planet, but 6.5 times more massive.
Super Earth’s scientific name is GJ 1214b. It is composed of 3/4 water, with “a solid core of iron and nickel and an atmosphere of hydrogen and helium” – just like Earth. Unfortunately, the likeness stops there. Super Earth is virtually an ocean planet, without any large pieces of land surface to live on. It’s also much hotter than Earth, and ten times more humid.
Still, it’s near enough to Earth, which means that one day, our astronomers may venture out and actually explore. We may yet to find a suitable planet to accommodate us in the future.
