Marriage.
That word just seemed to keep popping up in conversations during a party we attended last night. Seems like we’re getting old-er. Friends were overheard setting dates and going through pre-wedding rituals; one of which involved a three-day sit-down with your prospective bride/groom doing nothing but talk. I don’t think I could do that. Keber! Three days just talking (I’d rather we do some medical travel instead)! And in a quiet, retreat-type setting no less! I couldn’t even stand my college retreat (that lasted for only a day and with friends to boot)! Then there are the wedding seminars and the permission from parishes (yes, it seems that you have to obtain a permission from your parish just to get wed) and other rituals like subi pidi and the like.
I didn’t think that getting married was soo complicated. Why couldn’t couples just hitch up quietly?
My idea of a nice, quiet wedding would go something like this:
Couple goes on an exclusive romantic getaway. It should be somewhere tropical. El Nido perhaps, or Thailand, or maybe even Hawaii. They frolic on the sand, dine on crabs, deep fried pork leg and veggies. Rump around in their room. Somewhere between all that, prospective groom-to-be proposes to wife-to-be. Here two things could happen.
If Wife-to-be accepts: they fly off to a nice church in Madrid the very next day to get married. No fanfare, no guests. Just the two of them. Well, maybe a close friend or two. Or three. It depends actually but it has to be limited to really close friends. But absolutely no friends should be allowed during the honeymoon.
If Wife-to-be declines: guy flies off to some remote isle in the pacific, drown himself in booze and tears, and hope to god that his wife-to-be just played a practical joke on him.
