Got My uMobile SIM

Posted on 23 July 2008 by Flisha

I thought üMobile had forgotten about me. I applied for it over a month ago but never received word back until a few days ago, when someone texted me she would be delivering my SIM on my doorstep.

üMobile is a new mobile service in the Philippines, capital of mobile text messaging. It’s free for the first six months of usage. üMobile will give you 00 ($2) worth of text credits a month for their right to send you sponsored text messages. A peso is worth a text message so that’s a hundred free messages a month.

Personally, I think the mobile user pays too big a price for free load here, especially with another competing carrier Sun Cellular giving unlimited text and calls (Sun-to-Sun only though) for less than P500 a month ($11), no ads of course. I really hate advertisements coming though my email, and I probably will appreciate them less on my mobile phone.

But obviously there’s a market that’s willing to try this, and I’m sure people will want to use it, maybe as their third line. It’s free and that’s always an attractive option. Many people here already have at least two lines, with their main line being either Globe or Smart, and their second line Sun. Some people have all three. So they’ll probably adopt this line too when it goes on the market.

What can I say, just love to communicate! Hehehe.

Anyway, I had to try this service, see how many ads I get and how reliable the system is. Here are some pics of the SIM package I received yesterday.

The first message I got from this SIM was a welcome message. The second was an offer to receive their MMS (multimedia messages) settings, which I promptly replied to with a YES. Recieved the settings and installed them.

The third message was the WAP settings, and I installed those too. Got a couple of help messages too. So far, no ads yet. Will use it for a few days and I’ll update you on whatever ads I get. :-)

I’ve got 9 invites to give away. All it takes is a blogroll link on your blog (Please? I need to build up some rank here hehe!). Then comment here with your email address, mobile phone number and I’ll give them to you. If you want the codes for free, go do a search, I’m sure there are still lots of invites available. :-)

I Won an iPod Shuffle!

Posted on 13 June 2008 by Flisha

Remember a few weeks ago I blogged about Yugatech and Tradeport giving away five iPod shuffles for the launch of the Tradeport forums?

Well, guess what?? Yugatech released the contest winners a few days ago, and I actually won an iPod shuffle!!! Yeah!!!

I’ve joined quite a few online over the years but this is the best prize I’ve ever gotten hehehe. I think it’s karma. I gave the same exact iPod shuffle (except it was silver) to my sister for her graduation last March. Now I have one too, in blue! (It’s really more of a violet color but since my favorite color is blue and it’s close enough when the light shines on it in a certain way, why not call it blue?)

Have a look at my new iPod! Hehehe.

Isn’t it pretty? And just because lately my traffic’s been rising (due to Entrecard, thank you very much!) and I’m elated at being able to monetize this blog (due to SocialSpark, thank you thank you!) and I’m feeling pretty (due to Gimmi telling me so, thank you love)…

Hehehehehehehe!!! That’s me right after a bath! I was so excited to use my new iPod I couldn’t wait! :D

Thank you Yuga and Tradeport!!!

SMS Is Now Free in the Philippines

Posted on 08 June 2008 by Flisha

So. If you’re a Pinoy aged 15-35 (or even not), I’m sure you’ve heard of üMobile. It’s a newly launched cellular service in the Philippines, world capital of text messaging. Everyone’s scrambling to get the service, but it’s still in the invite-only phase.

In the Philippines we already have 3 competing carriers, Smart (in the lead), Globe and Sun (current favorite of telebabad-ers). So why’s everyone so excited about üMobile? Well, it’s free. Or more appropriately, ad-funded.

Users have to agree to receive mobile ads, and in return for that, they get free load. Specifically, it’s 00 worth of load per month for the first 6 months. Viewing each ad will gain you P0.50, and one SMS is worth (usually) so you can send one message for every two ads you view. You could also save up your credits and use them for calls. (Yugatech has a breakdown of ads versus credits.)

So how do you get an invite? Many ways.

  1. If you know someone’s who already has the SIM, chances are they’re also giving away invite codes, so might wanna ask them for one.
  2. Technobiography‘s trick was to email his full name to üMobile’s customer service and he got an invite code.
  3. The third way is to go to the üMobile secret invite page, drop your full name and email address, then wait for the invite to show up in your email.
  4. And the final way is to go straight to the üMobile web site and click on the limited offer of free invites. Hehehe. That just showed up recently, so when it’s gone you can go back to Option #3 (there’s still 300+ invites last I visited).

Once you get an invite code, plug it in the website and answer all their questions. They’re holding some kind of raffle so the more questions you answer, the higher your chances of winning.

That is, if you get approved. Yeah. Your application will still be processed, for how long I have no idea, since *my* application is still being processed and it’s already been two weeks now. That’s kinda the reason I held off writing about this for so long, I was hoping to give you more info about the actual usage and all. They do say that the application period is from June 1 to August 31, so I guess I still have seven more weeks of waiting if I’m super unlucky. Let’s hope not. Heh.

In any case, go try your luck and tell me how it goes. :-)

Counting My Luck

Posted on 28 December 2007 by Flisha

Urgh I’ve had a rash of bad luck lately.

Right before coming home from I broke my eyeglasses so I’ve been abusing my contact lenses by wearing them all day resulting in eye strain and headaches.

Last week I attended a Christmas party and ended up losing my ATM along with 000 worth of cash. Ouch.

Today I’m down with the flu. I wasn’t able to attend my reunion last night at Antonio’s and I probably won’t be able to make it to Sta. Cruz Island tomorrow. Huhuhu.

But I’m trying to cheer myself up by posting this pic of me on the 24th, busily unwrapping presents from Gim and putting on my new bracelets. :-) He gave me three bracelets, a shoulder bag and a pair of earphones to replace the ones that recently broke. He’s such a sweetie. :-)

I’m hoping my streak of bad luck has ended, beginning with my recent P300 win at Auction.ph. They’ve got another giveaway, this time the prizes are these:

I definitely want that Nokia gift certificate! :-) I’ve been meaning to buy a new cellphone, since a Sun Cellular cell site has just been built right beside our house! Yay, a good signal from Sun, finally! :-)

So what are you waiting for? Go join that contest!

Auction.ph and YugaTech E-Money Giveaway

Posted on 22 December 2007 by Flisha

The last time I won anything from the Internet was when I was bloghopping for credits on BlogExplosion. The first time was back in 1999, when I gave a certain website a rave review. I won a book. My (late) father once won an HP printer from the Internet.

Which is why I love joining online . If you’re careful in choosing which to join, then most of the time it’s risk-free and, if you’re lucky, you’ll be amply rewarded. Well, so far I’ve been lucky. And good luck has struck me once more!

I regularly visit tech-related blogs, one of which is YugaTech. Two weeks ago, Yuga posted an e-money giveaway contest, sponsored by Auction.ph. Today I checked back and the results were in, and I won! I get 300 pesos worth of e-money! Yay!

What’s more is that they’ve extended the contest to December 26, so you can actually join the contest and maybe you’ll win, too. :-) Good luck and happy holidays!

Exploring Free SMS in the Philippines

Posted on 08 April 2007 by Flisha

Detox Tip #3: Find Freebies on the Internet

SMS or texting in the Philippines is as much a way of life as wearing clothes. Everybody does it. There are three major cellphone carriers, Globe, Smart and Sun Cellular. Each text message normally costs Php1, but promos routinely crop up to minimize fees and entice new subscribers.

But I hate paying for anything, especially for something I believe should be free – such as the ability to send a meager 150 characters of data to another phone when you regularly pay for call credits. So I love finding freebies over the Internet.

I was one of the first subscribers to Chikka, an Internet service that allows (and now, foreigners, too) to send free text messages from their PCs to cellphones in the Philippines (and now, to other selected countries, too). But it’s a limited service, it allows a user to send only 3 messages to any single number. I get around that by having multiple accounts, but it’s such a hassle. Oh, and sometimes the messages are delayed by a few hours.

I’ve tried another fairly new service, Wapot. There are no limits to sending messages, but it’s quite unreliable. Sometimes the message gets sent, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes the service is fast, sometimes it’s not.

Recently, I’ve come across another free texting service online, and it’s Callwave. It’s easy enough to use, but it’s a widget which means you have to attach it somewhere like your personalized homepage, as you see in my screenshot. But as soon as it’s up, it’s a real breeze to use. Registering your number takes a second and then you can send messages to anyone, anywhere in the world. I tried it and there are no delays in receiving messages. Unfortunately, the number of messages you can send per day is limited. I was only able to send around 5 messages before it told me to “please try again tomorrow.” So I guess this is a good service to use if you’re in a hurry, but I wouldn’t advise you to uninstall your Chikka program just yet.

I don’t often find the need to call or text anybody so I don’t load my phone much. Except nowadays, when Gim is in Dapitan and there’s no other way to contact him during the day (at night when nobody’s using their boarding house phone, we call each other through PLDT NDD), I do load about Php100 everyday. Still, it’s heavy on my pocket since I’m saving for PIDC and since I don’t have any incoming salary on the 15th (waaaahh, it’s school policy for non-permanents). Every cent counts, so free texting is extremely helpful, hehe.

Hope this post is helpful, too, for financially-challenged texters out there like me. Tell me if you guys find any other SMS freebies out there. :)
