New Moon does well on Box Office Sales despite poor reviews

New Moon does well on Box Office Sales despite poor reviews

Posted on 21 November 2009 by Gim

November 20, 2009.

The day that teen (and tween) girls around the world have been waiting for. This day will go down in the annals of history as New Moon Day (the day after New Moon Opening Night). On this day, fans of the Twilight saga flocked to theaters to see the film adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s New Moon, the second installment of the Twilight series (and to see Jacob Black lose belly fat and find six-packs instead).

Weathering poor reviews from critics, the movie actually did quite well on opening day, surpassing even Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in ticket sales. This despite reviews like this one where the author describes the movie as “uneven, frustratingly bland and often risible” and “Significantly more stilted, cloying and nodescript [sic] than its predecessor, Moon stares full-on into the flat, gray abyss of teenage gothic longing and sexual repression…”

This just proves that not even bad acting could faze the cult created by the Twilight series. Or maybe they all just came to see Taylor Lautner and his ripped bod.shirtless-taylor-lautner-jacob-black-new-moon-poster

My Wishlist

Posted on 10 October 2009 by Gim

So Christmas is just around the corner. Well, it’s still a coupla months away actually, but unless you want a pile of holiday cards underneath your tree come Christmas day, I suggest you put up your wish list as well. My top 5:

  1. Zendikar Booster Box- this is simply *the* coolest set released by Wizards with it’s repertoire of fetch lands and landfall mechanic. Plus it’s also got a reaally broken card that everyone’s just dying to have: Lotus Cobra. So even though by the time Christmas rolls in and we’re already about to enter this set’s twilight, I’d still appreciate a box ‘o these babies. ($100)
  2. adiSTAR Ride- The ad says it all. “The running shoe is all about the ultimate ride. The feel is even more luxurious and responsive with advanced 3D ForMotion™ technology.” ($124.99)
  3. Honda XR 200 (2009)- Man. I just love mean machines and this baby is definitely it. I can truly say that I’ve personally (courtesy of a friend) felt the power of this beast’s 200cc engine as I gunned the throttle down the highway easily reaching 100kph in practically no time. ($2500)
  4. Breitling Chronomat B01- Sleek. Modern. Built to last. Would look great on any occasion. ($7770)
  5. 2010 Ford Explorer- ($28,880) what can I say? This *is* a wish list. :)

So how about you? Got that wish list yet?

PS Thanks to cargurus and schwanzerbergtells for the photos!

New Moon Trailer

Posted on 25 July 2009 by Flisha

Two New Moon movie trailers debuted at Comic Con and someone uploaded it to Youtube! Yayyy! The vids are kinda shaky but until we get the official uploads, let’s take whatever we can get, right ladies?! Right!

Watch a clip Bella on the motorcycle, crashing, and of super hot Jacob taking his shirt off to tend to Bella’s cut! (And a creepy ghosty Edward.)

Check out that six pack! Dayum. Wireless alarms are going off all over the place. So wrong. So so so wrong. Haha. Taylor’s really good at the Jacob role, huh? (Can’t say the same for Kristin, though.) Here’s another clip, with Edward this time, taking his shirt off!! After the jump!

w00t! Hey, where’d Rob get the abs? Didn’t know he had any haha! Too bad he’s all pale, but then again he is playing a vampire. I wanna see him play human in a movie!

Want a preview of the New Moon plot? (Unless, of course, you’ve read the book, then you’d know it by heart already!) Here’s a plot summary written by IMDB:

After Bella recovers from the vampire attack that almost claimed her life, she looks to celebrate her birthday with Edward and his family. However, a minor accident during the festivities results in Bella’s blood being shed, a sight that proves too intense for the Cullens, who decide to leave the town of Forks, Washington for Bella and Edward’s sake. Initially heartbroken, Bella finds a form of comfort in reckless living, as well as an even-closer friendship with Jacob Black. Danger in different forms awaits.

Can’t wait to see New Moon! The trailers look good! Here’s hoping it’s not gonna suck like the first one!!!

New Moon Trailer

Posted on 01 June 2009 by Flisha

The New Moon teaser is here! New Moon is, by the way, the second novel in the Twilight saga. Like you didn’t know. :)

Looks good!

Oh my god the trailer looks sooo good! I am so excited! I don’t know who’s directing this thing but I am just glad it’s no longer Catherine Hardwicke because she really sucked at directing.

You guys might be thinking I’m not into Twilight from all the negative stuff I’ve said about it in comparison to Sookie and True Blood but really I love it the same as you! The stories were fantastic, it was just Stephenie Meyer’s telling that was unfortunate, and thus, made it so not a stellar experience.

Which is why I was so excited to watch Twilight, because I thought it would be a great movie. Unfortch, not. But this trailer looks surprisingly good! And not all greenish and monocolor like the first movie! There are actually red hues in there!! Yay for color!

And the make-up is soo much better! Did you notice Rob’s lipstick isn’t as bright red anymore? Lolololol! He looks so much hotter! Hee!

And speaking of hot, omigod, Taylor Lautner has bulked up! Oh I love his body. And I so love his skin color. :) :) :) And okay now I feel like a pervert for saying all those things, ‘coz he is only what, 15? Ugh, I am going to pretend he is older!

The only thing I didn’t like from the trailer was Bella’s acting when she said “Kiss Me”. Sooo unnatural and awkward. I cringed. She’s not a very good actress…

While the best thing was definitely the last, where Jacob springs to action and transforms into a wolf. W00t! Loves it! I am so looking forward to more wolves and more half-nekkidness. Er… heh.

And! How wonderful is it that the scenes are not cut straight out of the book? Like, Edward never throws Bella against the piano and causes her entire arm to bleed! And Bella never sees Jacob transform into a wolf in the forest. And Jacob doesn’t save her himself, it was him and his pack of wolves, and they were already in wolf form when they save Bella.

I love surprises! Bring it on! :D

Dead and Gone: A Messy Review

Posted on 07 May 2009 by Flisha

So, I got myself a copy of the latest Sookie Stackhouse novel, Dead and Gone. (We are on Book 9 now). I’d been waiting, so avidly, for this book ever since December 2008, when I discovered the Southern Vampire Mysteries and gorged through Books 1-8 in less than two weeks! (Treadmills, stretches and diets forgotten, natch.)

First, let me just say I absolutely loved the Sookie books, especially Book 4, the part where Eric got amnesia and Sookie took care of him and where the Sookie-Eric saga began. The pairing was very unexpected, since Sookie and Eric were always love/hate. But perhaps predictable, also, since women always fall for the wrong guy who turns out to be the right one. Think Joey/Pacey. Is it wrong that I am comparing Sookie/Eric to Joey/Pacey?! LOL.

Book 4 to Book 8 was like Dawson’s Creek Season 3! Yes, where we sit and watch Joey and Pacey bicker and fight and we despair, because, omigod why can’t they see they’re perfect for one another?? Just do it already!! Well Book 9 was supposed to be like the culmination of that wonderful season (where Joey and Pacey literally sail off into the ocean), except, Sookie and Eric had a fuck, and then, nada. No resolutions.

* * * * * Dead and Gone Spoilers Below * * * * *

So, the verdict is: I am truly very disappointed with Dead and Gone. So many things happened during this book, there were so many characters involved, but not a single character was given depth. Here’s a list of some “What’s the point???” or otherwise WTF moments from the book:

  1. Octavia Fant (the older witch staying with Sookie) gets a boyfriend from out of nowhere and leaves the Sookie house in about two pages (Okay maybe the point was so Sookie could have sex with Eric, but heller, couldn’t she just have gone to town for a bit?)
  2. Quinn the tiger comes to visit his ex-paramour and rehash their lost love but gets headbutted by Bill instead and then we don’t hear from him ever again. (Was it even necessary for him to show up in Book 9? Thought that was over and done with. What a waste of pages.)
  3. Sookie’s telepathic baby cousin’s father gives her a call only to be brushed aside by Sookie saying “Call me in a month, am busy.” (Okayyy.)
  4. Claudine the fairy gets pregnant, then nothing for pages and pages, then at the end of the book, she is suddenly dead. We don’t even see any action. It only comes from Niall’s mouth, as though it was the author’s afterthought to kill off some major characters in Book 9 so Book 10 wouldn’t be so messy.
  5. Pam and Amelia who? (Where were they??)

So, yeah, am really bummed out. Aside from the crazy stuff I mentioned above, the biggest question from Book 8 was never answered. What question, you say? Well look at the DAG cover. It’s Sookie in between Eric and Bill. Yeah that sandwich hasn’t been eaten in four books, so it’s just about rotting by now. You wanna know how Book 9 ends? Here it is:

“The vampire is not a bad man, and he loves you,” Niall said. He rose. “Good-bye.” He bent and kissed my cheek. There was power in his touch, and I suddenly felt better. Before Jason could gather himself to object, Niall kissed his forehead, and Jason’s tense muscles relaxed.
Then my great-grandfather was gone before I could ask him which vampire he meant.

Ohmaygahd doesn’t she know yet?? *Rolls eyes*

Sigh. I still love Sookie. She’s my girl. I’ll take her over Bella any day. But just like sometimes I want to tear the ends of my hair out because I just cannot see why Bella loves/wants/needs Edward so much to the point that she wastes her life away when he leaves (which is really why I cannot stand the Twilight books, Bella just rubs the feminist in me the wrong way), I am getting incensed with Sookie for being so on the fence with Eric!

Obviously the vampire loves her. Book 9 is all about Eric telling Sookie he loves her. (He risked his life, and those of his underlings, to save Sookie.) And all she can think about is whether or not her feelings are real or blood bound! (They swapped blood a LOT of times already. Makes their relationship complicated.) And she’ll have sex with Eric but she won’t cement the status of her relationship because she can’t make a decision. Ugh! So Bella-like! (You know, where she was pining for Edward the whole time leading Jacob on?) Wanting a man to make the decision for her! Get your spine back, Sookie!!

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed DAG. Just. Just not as much as the other books. It just feels like Charlaine Harris didn’t put much thought to this book. Like she knew it wasn’t perfect but she had a deadline to meet so she shrugged and rushed it off to the presses. That’s really how I feel.

I’ll still be here for Book 10. But maybe now, a little less avid.

True Blood in the Philippines

True Blood in the Philippines

Posted on 17 March 2009 by Flisha

Yay! True Blood will finally make its way to the Philippines via HBO Asia’s Max Channel, on April 9 at 9pm.

This will be True Blood’s first showing in Asia, and if you cannot wait to see the entire series an agonizing week at a time, you can download the series from Mininova. (As I did, right after reading the Sookie Stackhouse books.)

If you’re a fan of Twilight, I am not sure you will like True Blood. There’s a lot more gore, sex and gritty reality to this vampire fantasy. But if you’re one very disappointed vampire fan (from the overhyped book, and the terrible movie), then give True Blood a shot.

I swear this is one case where I think the screen surpasses the novel. But, read the book first. You’ll be able to appreciate how Alan Ball, the director of True Blood, takes the book and transforms it so elegantly to the screen. The plot and story are perfectly intact, but nothing is spoonfed from the book, the series even examines some characters more closely than the books ever did. The actors fit their parts to a tee and can actually act (Anna Paquin won a Golden Globe for her performance), the shots, the scripts, the scenes are utterly amazing, and if the Southern Vampire Mysteries couldn’t get real enough, True Blood will certainly deliver all the grit, the gore and the glamour you can devour.

Trust me, you don’t want to miss this show.

Takipsilim: The Philippine Remake of Twilight

Takipsilim: The Philippine Remake of Twilight

Posted on 24 December 2008 by Flisha

Update: The article over at ABSCBN has been removed. It is rumored this may be merely an elaborate hoax, but ABSCBN has not yet released a statement.

Omigod. The Philippines is coming out with its own version of Twilight. Yes, that Stephenie Meyer book which was made into a movie directed by Catherine Hardwicke and starring the meh Kristen Stewart and the rougishly handsome Robert Pattinson.

The Tagalog Twilight is called Takipsilim (I didn’t know that was the literal Tagalog translation for Twilight! To me it loosely translates to “under the cover of darkness”) and it stars Filipino actors Rayver Cruz and Shaina Magdayao.

Um. Couldn’t they find a handsomer looking actor, like, say Gerald Anderson?? Hehehehe.

Also… I wonder if they’re going to cut off Rayver’s lower half. In Philippine folklore, vampires are called aswang or mananggal and they usually have freakishly large batlike wings and they fly, but only their upper bodies fly. Yes, they leave their lower halves wherever. Like in their house maybe. Hahaha. And they can turn into bats.

In the Twilight book, the Filipino danag was mentioned. It’s actually a Visayan word for the Tagalog aswang or manananggal. The Philippines has a lot of languages and dialects, so…

From ABSCBN:

Filipino fans of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series will soon have another reason to celebrate after broadcasting giant ABS-CBN bagged the exclusive rights to make a local television series based on the vampire novels.

Initial reports said ABS-CBN paid $1 million with co-producer Ignite Media for the rights to the Twilight series. The new series, tentatively titled “Takipsilim”, will reunite the onscreen tandem of Rayver Cruz and Shaina Magdayao.

Taping for the series will start February of next year. Some parts of the series will be shot abroad and the other locations include Tagaytay, Bukidnon and Baguio. The series will be directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina.

From Yehey:

Rayver Cruz will star as Edward Cullen and Shaina Magdayao as Isabella Swan in the local television version “Twilight.” The hit vampire novel has been bought by ABS-CBN has bought for more than US$1 million with Ignite Media as co producer. The taping is set to start next year by Feb. in Baguio, Tagaytay, Bukidnon with some parts to be shot abroad. To be directed by Cathy Garcia Molina, the TV adaptation will focus on Edward and Bella’s love story to be treated as drama, romance and fantasy. The unofficial cast includes Valeen Montenegro as Alice Cullen, Gabby Concepcion as Dr. Carlisle Cullen, Luis Manzano as Emmett Cullen, Al Tantay as Charlie Swan, Yayo Aguila as Renee Dwyer, Fred Payawan as Jacob Black, Carlos Agassi as James, Chin Chin Gutierrez as Esme Cullen, Karylle as Rosalie Hale, Joross Gamboa as Jasper Hale, Jessy Mendiola as Jessica Stanley, Empress Schuck as Angela Weber, Brad Murdoch as Laurent, Nikki Bacolod as Victoria and Aaron Villaflor as Mike Newton. Rayver and Shaina were former love team partner but the tandem did not work. It seems their tandem will click in “Twilight.”
